Dr. Fabiola Guzmán Mejía is a Full-Time Professor and Researcher in the Department of Biological Systems at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), Xochimilco Campus, where she is a member of the Academic Area of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics. She earned her degree in Pharmaceutical Biological Chemistry from UAM and completed both her Master’s and Ph.D. in Neuropharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav). She is a Level I member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers and Researchers (SNII).
Her research focuses on the immunological and neuroimmunological mechanisms that regulate inflammation and intestinal homeostasis, with particular emphasis on intestinal barrier integrity, gut–brain communication, and the role of mast cells in inflammatory diseases. She integrates experimental pharmacology, immunology, and molecular biology approaches to investigate the pathophysiological processes underlying inflammatory disorders and to identify biomolecules with therapeutic potential.
Her research has contributed to a better understanding of the mechanisms that preserve intestinal barrier integrity and their role in inflammatory responses, providing evidence that supports the development of novel therapeutic strategies for inflammation-based diseases.
As an educator, Dr. Guzmán Mejía teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in pharmacology, immunology, and research methodology. She also leads research projects and serves as both thesis advisor and co-advisor for master’s and doctoral students, particularly in the Master’s Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, the Doctoral Program in Health Sciences, and the Higher School of Medicine at the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), contributing to the training of highly specialized researchers and health professionals.
She leads research projects focused on the neuroimmunological regulation of the intestinal barrier and the development of therapeutic strategies for inflammatory diseases. In addition, she collaborates with research groups across Mexico, fostering interdisciplinary research and advancing knowledge in the fields of neuroimmunology and experimental pharmacology.
As part of her science communication activities, Dr. Guzmán Mejía has authored outreach articles for Avance y Perspectiva, Cinvestav’s science magazine, including The Intestinal Barrier to the Rhythm of Stress, which explores the relationship between stress, intestinal barrier function, and inflammatory diseases. She also participates in institutional public engagement initiatives that promote scientific literacy and strengthen the connection between scientific research and society.
