Profile
Dr. Edmar Olivares Soria holds a Bachelor's degree in Physics and Mathematics with a specialization in Mathematics from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), a Master's degree and a Ph.D. in Music Technology from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) —both awarded with Honors— and a Master's degree in Applied Economics–Econometrics from UNAM. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Research in Applied Mathematics and Systems (IIMAS-UNAM), focusing on deep learning applied to audio analysis, computer vision, and multivariate time series, while also pursuing an international certification in Astrophysics and Planetary Formation. In 2024, he carried out an academic research stay at Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge, dedicated to studying deep learning models and entropy metrics applied to musical analysis. He holds professional certifications in Generative AI, Deep Learning, and Machine Learning from Google, Oracle, Meta, DeepLearning.AI, and IBM, as well as in Quantum Computing from Universidad Anáhuac.
He serves as a Professor-Researcher at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Lerma. He holds the rank of National Researcher Level I in Mexico's Sistema Nacional de Investigadoras e Investigadores (SNII, 2026–2030 term) under SECIHTI, and is a member of the National System of Art Creators (SNCA) of the Ministry of Culture. He is a member of the Mexican Society of Artificial Intelligence (SMIA) and the Mexican Mathematical Society (SMM).
His research bridges artificial intelligence, mathematical modeling, and computational data analysis, with a special emphasis on deep learning, multivariate time series, audio and spatial sound localization, computer vision, Music Information Retrieval, and quantum computing. In parallel, he develops interdisciplinary research on artificial general intelligence, computational creativity, synthetic phenomenology, philosophy of artificial intelligence, futures studies, and speculative research. He is the author of three research books, as well as peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings on artificial intelligence, art, music, computational systems, and emerging technologies, including the co-coordination of edited volumes.
As an interdisciplinary multimedia creator, his artistic output encompasses multichannel electroacoustic music, digital art, 3D procedural modeling and animation, multimedia performance, immersive audio, data visualization, and audiovisual creation for contemporary dance. His work has been featured and selected at festivals, institutions, and artistic venues across Europe, Asia, North America, and Latin America. His accolades include the WESA Residency Prize 2026 in South Korea, official selection at the 11th UAEM University Art Biennial (2026), First Place for Best Experimental Short Film at FICMA 2025, the Finalist Award at the Digital Art Zurich Festival (2024 and 2025), the Best Photography Award at URTIcanti Festival 2024 (Italy), Third Place at the Iannis Xenakis Electroacoustic Music Competition 2023 (Greece), Honorable Mention at the Concours International de Composition Electroacoustique SIME 2018 (France), and first prize at the INA GRM–Fonoteca Nacional acousmatic composition competition in 2016. He has also been awarded the Ecos Sonoros Grant 2022 (CENART), the Resiliencias Sonoras Grant 2020 (Música UNAM), and the Performing Artists Grant 2018 (FONCA).
He has completed research and creation residencies at institutions such as INA GRM in Paris, Musique & Recherches in Belgium, DXArts at the University of Washington, and the Conservatory of Belo Horizonte. His academic activity includes undergraduate and graduate teaching, thesis supervision and co-supervision, peer evaluation, and participation in governing bodies. In academic and cultural management, he has established and directed the PIATS Research Area and the Multimedia Exploration Laboratory at UAM Lerma. He has served as a jury member and evaluator for funding programs including SECIHTI-CONACyT, COMECyT, Jóvenes Creadores, and UAEM. Furthermore, he founded and directed the International Colloquium Espacio-Inmersividad (2019–2022), the DESFASES multimedia festival (2023–2024), and the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Futures Studies and Speculative Research (2025).
