Dr. Jorge Martínez Contreras holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne. He holds the appointment of Distinguished Professor (Profesor Distinguido) at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, a distinction approved during the Academic Council Session No. 363 on June 12, 2013, and holds the rank of National Researcher Level III in Mexico's Sistema Nacional de Investigadoras e Investigadores (SNII).

He has a teaching career spanning over 55 years in Mexican public universities, having taught at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos (UAEM, 1971–1973) and the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP, 1973–1974). He has served as a full-time professor at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana since 1974, an institution where he was a founding faculty member and served as the first Academic Secretary of the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Iztapalapa Campus, where he later held the positions of Divisional Director, Campus Secretary, and Campus President (Rector de Unidad).

Internationally, he has taught at French universities and served as a visiting researcher at institutions such as the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in Spain, as well as the Cité des Sciences et des Techniques (La Villette/CNRS) and the Institut d'Histoire et de Philosophie des Sciences et des Techniques (IHPST) at Université de Paris I in France. He was awarded the Academic Palms by the French Government, is a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences, the Ibero-American Association of Philosophy of Biology (AIFIBI), and the Ibero-American Network of Philosophy of Biology, and has served as president of both the Mexican Philosophical Association and the Mexican Primatological Association.

He currently serves as a Professor-Researcher in the Social Sciences Philosophy Section of the Department of Philosophy within the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Iztapalapa. His research focuses on the phenomenology of existence, cultural evolution, and the philosophy of rock art.

He is the author or editor of over 25 books and author or co-author of more than 130 research works published in Spanish, English, and French, notably including his books Sartre. La filosofía del hombre and Buffon’s Primates (a trilingual edition published by Siglo XXI Editores), alongside various published translations from French, English, and Portuguese. He served as editor of Ludus Vitalis, a trilingual journal on the philosophy of life sciences, and has supervised undergraduate capstone projects and graduate theses in Mexico and Spain.

He has organized or co-organized nearly 30 national and international symposia and conferences across Spain, France, and Brazil, including the November 2025 conference on the Philosophy of Rock Art held at UAM Iztapalapa and UABCS. Furthermore, he has delivered nearly 250 keynote speeches and papers in three languages.

As a principal investigator, he secured and coordinated three research projects funded by CONAHCYT, which led to the establishment and consolidation of the Darwin Center for Evolutionary Thought, where he currently serves as director. Additionally, alongside Dr. Ricardo López Wilchis (DCBS), he secured Frontier Science Project CF-2023-I-891 from SECIHTI, focused on the philosophy of rock art, whose 2026 final report received commendations from peer reviewers.

He has conducted scientific expeditions in Africa, Japan, Bolivia, and Baja California Sur, publishing graphic artwork linked to his research nationally and internationally. His research team disseminates its scientific work through its website and social media channels, leading a unique project in Mexico focused on cultural evolution, the study of culture in non-human animals, human cultural evolution (particularly rock art), and the impact of evolutionary processes on cultural, social, and historical phenomena.
