Dr. Janette Berenice González Nava holds a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Biological Chemistry and a Master’s degree in Agricultural Sciences from Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM), Xochimilco Campus, and a Ph.D. in Health Sciences from Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEMex). She has been recognized as a Candidate in the National System of Researchers (SNII) for the 2026–2029 term.
Her primary research focuses on microbial genetics, the genomics of actinobacteria (particularly the genera Nocardia and Streptomyces), and the bioinformatic discovery of secondary metabolites with pharmacological and antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant pathogens. She completed research stays at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (France) in 2013 and 2023, strengthening international collaborations in molecular biology, microbial genetic diversity, and the phylogeny of pathogens responsible for nocardiosis.
She is the author and co-author of numerous scientific articles published in internationally indexed journals, including Microbiology Resource Announcements, Records of Natural Products, New Microbes and New Infections, and the Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de São Paulo. Her publications range from the first report of Nocardia wallacei isolation in Mexico to the genomic characterization of bacterial strains with potential applications against neonatal sepsis. She has also served as a technical evaluator and scientific reviewer for national research funding calls addressing strategic topics, such as environmental contamination and ecological impact, and has participated as a reviewer in academic forums.
She currently serves as a Full-Time Research Professor (Professor B) at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM). Previously, she was a faculty member at Universidad del Valle de México (UVM), where she received the 2023 Teaching Excellence Award. She has extensive experience supervising undergraduate theses, professional internships, social service projects, and clinical laboratory training. She also served as faculty advisor to the UAM team in the 2025 International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition (Overgrad Section), where the team was awarded the Silver Medal (2nd Place).
Dr. González Nava is also a strong advocate for women’s participation in STEM disciplines. She served on the executive board of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), Mexico Chapter, where she coordinated the Networking area and led the Mexican Women Scientists Conference and Workshop Series (2023 and 2024). Through these initiatives, she promoted professional networking, talent development, and science outreach across Mexico and Latin America.
