Dr. Gustavo Lins Ribeiro holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the City University of New York (1988) and a Master’s degree in Anthropology from the University of Brasilia (1980). He holds the rank of Researcher Emeritus in Mexico's Sistema Nacional de Investigadoras e Investigadores (SNII).

He has been a Professor at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana since 2018, assigned to the Department of Cultural Studies at the Lerma Campus, and serves as a faculty member in the Graduate Program in Anthropological Sciences at the Iztapalapa Campus. He was also a Full Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Brasilia, which named him Professor Emeritus in 2020.

He has held significant international academic leadership positions. He served on the Advisory Council of the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research in New York. He was president of the Associação Nacional de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Ciências Sociais (ANPOCS, Brazil, 2012–2014) and the Associação Brasileira de Antropologia (ABA, 2002–2004). He served as the founding president of the World Council of Anthropological Associations (WCAA) and the World Anthropologies Committee of the American Anthropological Association. Additionally, he was vice-president of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES, 2009–2018), where he remains an Honorary Member. In 2021, he received the Franz Boas Award for Exemplary Contributions to Anthropology from the American Anthropological Association.

His research focuses on globalization, transnationalism, the internet, development, world anthropologies, and colonialism-imperialism. He has authored and edited 32 volumes (including translations) in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, published across Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, China, Colombia, Spain, the United States, England, and Mexico.

His recent books include Panoramas de las Antropologías Mundiales (2 volumes, UAM Lerma and Iztapalapa, CIESAS, and Iberoamericana, 2023), for which he served as Editor-in-Chief; Globalización desde abajo. La otra economía mundial (Fondo de Cultura Económica and El Colegio de México, 2015), co-edited with Carlos Alba Vega and Gordon Mathews; and Otras Globalizaciones (Gedisa and UAM Iztapalapa and Lerma Campuses, 2018).

He has published more than 220 articles and book chapters (including translations) in eight languages (Portuguese, Spanish, English, Japanese, French, German, Italian, and Russian) across 28 countries. Furthermore, he serves on the scientific and editorial boards of over 20 academic journals throughout Latin America, Europe, the United States, and China.
