Dr. Carmen Estela Loreto Gómez holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences from the National Institute of Public Health (Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública, INSP), Mexico. She has more than 25 years of academic and research experience at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Azcapotzalco Campus, where she has developed extensive expertise in environmental health, risk assessment, and research project management.

Her research focuses on the effects of environmental exposure on population health, with particular emphasis on urban green spaces, toxic contaminants, human and environmental health risk assessment, and the application of mixed-methods research to address complex environmental issues.

She has participated in the development of applied studies and methodologies for human health and environmental risk assessment through projects funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Between 2016 and 2019, she contributed to the project “Environmentally Sound Management of Waste Containing Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Mexico,” where she developed methodologies and technical studies for the characterization and assessment of contaminated sites. Her work included preliminary risk assessments of the former Fertimex-Tekchem industrial facility in Salamanca, Guanajuato, and the San Miguel Galindo mine in San Juan del Río, Querétaro, as well as the development of risk assessment methodologies for temporary collection centers for agrochemical containers, the adaptation of the Environmental Management Toolkit for obsolete pesticide storage facilities, and the preparation of the National Inventory of Pesticides Containing Persistent Organic Pollutants in Mexico.

She has also led institutionally funded research projects. Among them is the project “Development of an Interactive Digital Comic for Teaching Basic Chemistry,” funded through the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Rector General’s Office Competitive Research Program (2025–2026), which focused on the design of innovative digital educational resources to enhance science education.

In addition, Dr. Loreto Gómez serves as a scientific reviewer for research proposals submitted to the National Council for Humanities, Sciences and Technologies (CONAHCYT), contributing to the national evaluation and strengthening of scientific research.

Her career integrates applied research, methodological development, environmental risk assessment, and the training of human resources, with contributions aimed at generating scientific evidence to support public health protection, environmental management, and science education.
