Profile

Dr. Abel Sentíes Granados serves as a Full-Time Professor (Level C) in the Department of Hydrobiology within the Division of Biological and Health Sciences at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Unidad Iztapalapa, where he joined in 1985 through a competitive selection process. He holds the rank of National Researcher Level II in the Sistema Nacional de Investigadoras e Investigadores (SNII), specializing in Marine Phycology.

In undergraduate education, he has taught over 450 courses in Biology and Hydrobiology, contributing to curriculum design and course revisions. He has mentored 18 social service projects and supervised 10 doctoral dissertations and seven master's theses. He organizes postgraduate courses on the phylogenetic systematics of marine and brackish-water macroalgae and was awarded the UAM Unidad Iztapalapa Teaching Award in 2014 (23rd edition) and 2025 (34th edition).

Since 2001, he has led the research line "Systematics and Phylogeny of Marine Macroalgae" within the Comparative Phycology Research Group, which has maintained external peer-evaluated "Consolidated" status since 2013. His scientific output comprises 120 articles (108 indexed in specialized journals), nine book chapters, and three books focusing on marine phycology, taxonomy, phylogenetic systematics, floristics, ecology, biogeography, phylogeography, and conservation biology. He has delivered nearly 150 presentations at national and international conferences, coordinated regional and national congresses, and served as a project reviewer for UNAM, CONACYT, CONABIO, and SEP.

In university administration at UAM Iztapalapa, he has served as Departmental Representative to the Divisional Council (1988–1989), Coordinator of the Hydrobiology Undergraduate Program (1990–1993), Head of the Experimental Hydrobiology Research Group (1994–1995), Head of the Department of Hydrobiology (2000–2004), Coordinator of the Master's Program in Biology (2011–2012), Divisional Graduate Studies Coordinator for the Division of Biological and Health Sciences (2013), and Head of the Comparative Phycology Research Group (2014–2025). Additionally, he has served as editor-in-chief and associate editor for journals on aquatic biodiversity, and since 2019, he has served as Editorial Coordinator for the Division of Biological and Health Sciences.
