Profile

Dr. Humberto González-Márquez is a full-time Professor Titular “C” at the Department of Health Sciences, Iztapalapa Campus, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM). He has an extensive academic background from both Mexico and abroad, including bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Experimental Biology from UAM and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Henri Poincaré University (Nancy I, France). He was awarded the highest honor for his doctoral research on the acid-stress response in Streptococcus thermophilus.

His research career is notably diverse, focusing on three main areas: reproductive biology and toxicology, proteomics and glycobiology, and molecular microbiology. In reproductive research, he examines how emerging contaminants—such as pesticides like neonicotinoids and malathion, perfluoroalkyl substances like PFOS and PFOA, and endocrine disruptors—affect sperm capacitation, oocyte maturation, and early embryonic development using in vitro models with boar and rat spermatozoa. Simultaneously, his lab conducts proteomics to identify sperm membrane glycoproteins, discover breast cancer biomarkers through iTRAQ mass spectrometry, and analyze virulence factors of pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Vibrio mimicus, and Helicobacter pylori. Additionally, he has contributed to ecotoxicology by employing molecular biomarkers in aquatic species like Crassostrea virginica to evaluate pollution levels in coastal lagoons of the Gulf of Mexico.

He is a Level II National Researcher within Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNI) and has received the Desirable Academic Profile distinction from the Faculty Development Program of the Ministry of Public Education (PROMEP/SEP). His scientific work comprises over 55 indexed articles, which have garnered 660 citations and an h-index of 16. Additionally, he has supervised 14 doctoral dissertations and 10 master’s theses, aiding the development of researchers in Biological and Health Sciences, Experimental Biology, and Reproductive Biology.

Within UAM, he has served in various academic and administrative roles, such as Coordinator of the Doctoral Program in Biological and Health Sciences (2015-2019), Chair of the Divisional Academic Evaluation Committee (2001-2005), and member of multiple undergraduate and graduate academic committees. He teaches courses including Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Proteomics, Protein Purification, and Instrumental Methods across undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.
